Book of formulas believed to be a word-for-word transcription of the book 'Formulae medicamentorum, or, a compendium of the modern practice of physic. To which is prefixed an essay on the effects and uses of blood-letting' by Hugh Smith. The book contains 115 recipes, including formulas for convulsions and spasms, rickets, diuretic medicines, rheumatism, measles, angina.

The object is a book of formulas believed to be a word-for-word transcription of the text 'Formulae medicamentorum, or, a compendium of the modern practice of physic' originally compiled by English medical writer and surgeon Hugh Smith. Born in Herfordshire, Smith went on to study medicine at Edinbrugh University, obtaining his degree in 1755. In 1762 he was admitted to the Royal College of Physicians. He continued practising until his death.
The book provides a wealth of information regarding medical understanding and practices in 18th century Britain.
