Barrett and Swainson Chemists and Opticians was a chemists and opticians jointly owned by William Barrett and John Henry Swainson until October 1935, when Swainson took sole control of the company. The business was based at Albert Road, Devonport, Plymouth.
Scope and content
Set of 9 prescription books compiled by Barrett and Swainson chemists and opticians, Plymouth. All books except 'I' contain an alphabetical index of patients and organisations at the front. Customers include the Polish Naval Camp at Bickleigh.

The books are arranged in date order and named after a letter of the alphabet:
A - 8 November 1892 - 27 December 1905
B - 1 January 1906 - 31 December 1913
C - 9 July 1918 - 27 October 1921
D - 28 October 1921 - 22 March 1926
E - 23 March 1926 - 9 December 1931
F - 11 December 1931 - 18 August 1938
G - 23 August 1938 - 21 June 1943
H - 22 July 1943 - 8 September 1944
I - 8 September 1944 - 29 December 1947.

Book 'A' contains a formula for Diaphoretica near the back of the book.
Books 'B', 'D', 'E' and 'F' contains prescriptions written on William Barrett's personal headed notepaper.
Book 'C' contains a recipe for Dakin's Fluid near the front of the book.
Book 'D' contains a list of metric and imperial equivalents for trade purposes, based on board of trade standards.
Book 'F' contains a formula for Talbot's solution of iodine near the front of the book, and a solution for the Kodak Film Vertical Tank Developer near the back of the book.
Book 'I' contains recipe mixtures for Infants' Cold and Linctus' Anti-Asthmatic (Bencard) in the front of the book, and a loose advertisement for Farex standard parcels (possibly used as a bookmark).
