Geoffrey Stout worked as a doctor and practised in Middlesbrough from 1957 to 1987. He collected information on all areas of health within Teeside for several decades, including on subjects such as the plague, poisoning and smallpox. He joined the practice of Drs Lowbotham, Power, Slater and Hunter at 378 Linthorpe Surgery in Middlesebrough in 1957, working there until retirement, and was a member of the British Medical Association and Royal College of General Practitioners. Stout held a keen interest in medical history and was offered the position of archivist/historian at the Royal College of General Practitioners North of England in July 1990. Stout died in 2001.
Correspondence, newspaper cuttings, magazine articles and research notes. Subjects include histories of smallpox, poisoning, the plague, misuse of drugs and substances, National Morbidity Survey Classifications, history of public health, history of public health in Middlesbrough, manual for a Peters AR5 Audiometer, professional papers acquired by Stout including memoranda and committee meeting minutes, brochures relating to applications to establish NHS Trusts in the North East of England during the 1990s, and articles relating to the introduction of a 'new' GP contract in 1990. The collection also contains patient records which are closed to researchers.
