Hoyes studied medicine at Leeds University, qualifying in 1951. After first working as a GP, she moved to public health and was appointed Assistant County Medical Officer of Health for Lindsey, Lincolnshire. and became a child psychologist, primarily based in Doncaster and Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Hoyes returned to Yorkshire and received a Diploma in Psychological Medicine in 1968 from Leeds University. A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, she was appointed in 1970 as Consultant Child Psychiatrist to the Doncaster and Rotherham area health authority.

Collection of material acquired by Shirley Hoyes. Includes journals titled 'Diseases Common to Animal and Men' (Medical News Magazine, September 1966), 'The History of Medicine, 1066-1966' (Medical News Magazine, October 1966); copy of 'The Link' newspaper published by Rotherham Council in 1976 which contained an article about the dangers of Toxocara Camis; Sheffield Regional Hospital Board Cancer Registration report for 1960; Searle Scientific Services Hormone Assay Laboratory Specification List; report by Adwick Urban District Council on the Health of Adwick-le-Street in 1969; 'Northwing' journal Volume 42 No. 1 (May 1977); Lincoln County Council annual reports of the principal school medical officer/county medical officer of health (1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1964); Alford Urban District Council Medical Officer of Health's Annual Report (1957); British Medical Association booklet of fees for part-time medical services (1968, 1970, 1971); order of service for the opening of Greasbrough Junior and Infants School, Rotherham in April 1978; ten notebooks compiled by Hoyes while as a student at Leeds University and Leeds Medical School, annual reports of the county medical officer in the West Riding titled 'Health in the West Riding' (1969-1973); annual reports of the medical officer of health in Rotherham (1966-1967), examination papers and assignment sheets.

Subjects of the notebooks include practical neurology; experiments on sense organs; instructions for the dissection of the arm and thorax; the dissection of the abdominal viscera; dissection of pharynx, mouth and tongue; study of the thigh and buttock and hip; respiration and alterations in breathing; dissection of the perineal region and the pelvis; dissection of dorsal abdominal wall, diaphragm, kidneys, suprarenals and the ureter; the general study of the peritoneal cavity and disposition of the abdomino-pelvic viscera; surface anatomy; biochemistry.
