Educated at Morley Grammar School, Ethel Day became a qualified nurse in 1951 and as a midwife in 1952. She worked at Leeds Public Dispensay and Hospital, Bradford Royal Infirmary and also worked in Batley, and as a health visitor in Heckmondwike for four and a half years.

Day's sister, Doris, was a qualified nurse who was divisional nursing officer for Spenborough, Mirfield, Heckmondwike and Batley. Doris Day also organised the Spenborough Tufty Club, an organisation that taught children about road safety in the 1960s. Items related to Doris Day includes a certificate issued to her by the Central Midwives Board in 1937 and the National Health Service and Queen's Institute of District Nursing in 1965.

Lecture notes, certificates, books, pamphlets and posters compiled by Ethel Day relating to herself and her sister Doris. Includes lecture notebooks (subjects include diseases, anatomy, physiology, first aid, hygiene, nursing etiquette, anaesthetics, gynaecology, surgeries, ear nose and throat lectures) certificates including school examination certificates, certificate from Society of Apothecaries of London granting Ethel Day permission to dispense medicines, health visitor certificates issued to Doris and Ethel Day by the Royal Sanitary Institute, certificate from London County Council confirming that Doris Day had completed her nurse training, certificate from Bradford Royal Infirmary confirming that Ethel Day had completed her nurse training, certificate from Central Midwives Board permitting Ethel Day to practice as a midwife, one box of pamphlets, booklets, leaflets and posters relating to nursing, children's health and midwifery, album of photographs including of a visit to Lincoln Cathedral by Ethel Day, and a book of recipes used by Ethel Day at Royal Infirmary, Bradford.
