Rhodes Heygarth was born in Keighley in 1870 and was educated at Keighley Trade and Grammar School, before studying to become a doctor at Edinburgh University, graduating with first-class honours in 1895. He returned to Yorkshire to practice at Cross Gates in Leeds until his retirement in 1934. Heygarth was medical officer of health for Garforth and also served as lecturer and examiner to the St. John Ambulance Association.
Two books containing manuscript student notes, compiled by Dr Rhodes Heygarth, of lectures given by Dr Caird of Edinburgh University, on the subject of surgery, between 1894 and 1895.
