Ana May Husband worked as a nurse and health visitor between 1946 and 1975 in places including Leeds, Middlesbrough and York. After qualifying as a nurse in 1946, Husband trained to become a midwife, working at Leeds Maternity Hospital for a year, and qualified as a health visitor in 1950. Husband worked at Middlesbrough Health Department until 1956 when she moved to Gibraltar to take up a position with the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA) in 1955. Later in her career, Husband returned to the North East where she became a Director of Nursing at Teeside County Borough Council.
