James Albert Rhind was born in County Durham, and did his medical training at Leeds Medical School where he graduated MB ChB with first class honours in 1937 and won the William Hey Gold Medal of the University. The medal is awarded annually to the most distinguished graduate in medicine and surgery with honours.
He was appointed resident surgical officer to Leeds General Infirmary in 1938 . During the second world war he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and worked as a surgeon specialist. He served in India and Burma, and it was in India that he met his wife Dorothy, who was a nurse in the same unit. They were married in Calcutta, and went on to have 5 children: James Ronald, who is also an FRCS, Leslie, a dentist, Jean, a nurse, and twins Catherine and Andrew who are both teachers.
After the war they returned to Leeds where James worked as resident surgical officer until 1950, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1946 . He was appointed consultant surgeon at Pontefract Infirmary where he worked until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Moynihan Chirurgical Club which was founded in 1909 and was the first of its kind to be founded in the British Isles. Lord Moynihan wrote: “The activities of the Club shall be directed towards the advancement of surgery by visiting centre of surgical activity at home and abroad and by a free and informal interchange of ideas on the work seen.” As a member, Mr Rhind travelled all over Europe lecturing and teaching surgery.
He died on 30 September 1982 .
