Originating from New York City, McKesson and Robbins was founded in 1828 as Charles M. Olcott by Charles M. Olcott. In 1833 the business became an importer and wholesaler of botanical drugs and was renamed Olcott, McKesson and Co. John McKesson joined the company in 1833 and Daniel C. Robbins, who was previously an assistant to the partners, was made partner. When Olcott died in 1853, the company became McKesson and Robbins, and the name remained unchanged for over a century, until 1982 when it became McKesson Corporation, until the present day. By 1877 the company became importers and jobbers in drugs and druggists' articles, and also manufacturers of chemical and pharmaceutical preparations. McKesson's son, John Junior, had also joined the board of directors. In the 20th and 21st century, the business became the largest healthcare company in the United States of America; it was the ninth-largest company by revenue in the United States of America in 2024 and was a key vaccine distributor during the COVID-19 pandemic.
