Sylvia Thompson is a former health advisor at Leeds General Infirmary, and was a member of Leeds Daybreak Trust, a charity to support people with HIV. During Leeds HIV week in November 1991, the Curator at Leeds Art Gallery, Alex Robertson, gave permission for her to interview Susan Meens, a woman who did some work with and received support from the charity, in the foyer of the Art Gallery while Susan made hats. Other hats made by Susan were also put on display in the gallery over the weekend to raise awareness. Leeds Daybreak Trust's aims were to provide financial help to people living with HIV/AIDS who lived in Leeds or received medical services in Leeds. They issued one-off grants to cover specified costs and served as a registered charity from 1993-2010.
