Hidden Histories

The objects here aim to shine a light on medical stories which have often gone untold. Some of them relate to people and groups who have been marginalised for centuries and who still face additional barriers to accessing healthcare. Others aim to highlight the more controversial or unethical practices of celebrated surgeons whose less admirable traits have often been glossed over.

These hidden histories are not designed to demonise any individuals or overshadow their positive contributions to medicine. The project aims to enrich our collection by adding additional context, and to encourage us all to think about who is missing in traditional medical narratives.

These objects have been researched by MA students Amy Kitchingman, Alexander Walker, and Yang Shen, who have been working with the museum on a placement project.
