This is a teaching aid for medical and nursing staff. It aimed to challenge the historical treatment of people with disabilities as ‘patients’ or ‘cases’ and encourage new attitudes towards young people with disabilities. This followed the introduction of The Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act (1970), which put in place new rules about improving the welfare of disabled people in the UK in areas such as healthcare, housing, employment, and education. The aid’s focus on young people is significant, as disability is often treated as something that only affects older people, when in reality anyone can become disabled at any age. ‘Able to Grow Up’ informed healthcare workers on the importance of improving the independence of young disabled people, arguing that ‘disabled people can and should make their own choice’. Independence is particularly important for people with disabilities, whom society has historically treated as if they cannot do things themselves or make their own choices. The aid explains that one way that independence can be improved is through ensuring that young people and their families have a full understanding about their disabilities and the options that are available to them.
