According to the handwritten note inside its lid, this naval blood transfusion apparatus was taken from the German ship 'Grille' after the Royal Navy took control of it at the end of the Second World War. The 'Grille' was assigned to Adolf Hitler as a state yacht, carried many other senior officials of the Nazi regime, and was used for mine-laying and patrolling during the war.
