The Mini-Gravigard is a copper intrauterine device (IUD), more commonly known as a coil, which has been found to be more effective as an emergency contraception than emergency hormonal contraception (the morning after pill). It releases copper into the womb, which reduces the risk of pregnancy by 99.9% if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex. IUDs can also be used as regular contraceptive to prevent pregnancy, and are effective for 5-10 years. Searle pharmaceuticals were taken over by Pfizer in 2000, who continue to produce copper IUDs for use in the UK.
