Kidney and bladder pills were a popular medication in the mid-20th century. This medication did not require a prescription to consume and was available over the counter. They worked as a diuretic stimulant and urinary antiseptic, which was created to flush the kidneys, and through this promote the flow of urine. They were used for an extensive variety of conditions, including to reduce back pain, sciatica, restlessness, rheumatism, muscle aches, lumbago and headaches related to kidney dysfunction. The ingredients included methylene blue, which often resulted in the patient’s urine appearing blue or green.
The packaging instructs the user to drink plenty of water alongside the pills, and states adults should take 2 tablets before each meal, and an additional 2 at bedtime with water. Additionally, children who are 5+ are instructed to take 1 pill in the morning, and 1 pill at night.
E.C De Witt & Co. Ltd was the British branch of the American parent company, ‘E. C. DeWitt & Company’. In the latter parts of the 20th century, the popularity of the brand declined, and as a result, it was absorbed into larger companies, with the UK branch being dissolved in 2019.
