Reproduction of a photograph taken in 1949. The image shows the Monaghan lung at the Willard Parker Hospital, New York City. Dr Harry Seanor, deputy medical superintendent is shown fastening the one pound lung onto an 8 year old boy to show the difference in size to that of the 700 pound lung demonstrated by Nurse Annette Bohrer.

The iron lung was the state-of-the-art in life support technology during the early 20th century. The first iron lung was used in 1928 at Boston Children's Hospital. The orginal invention was continuously updated for easier transportation and use, like the example of the one pound iron lung depicted in this photograph.
