Carbon steel smallpox vaccination needles in sealed glass tubes and thus unused. Needles like these were used to adminster the smallpox vaccination, which was made compulsory in 1853 for infants up to three months old. The disease was eradicated in the late C20th, with the last endemic case occuring in Somalia in 1977.
