circa 1850

Vaccination spirit lamps were frequently used to sterilise instruments prior to vaccine administration to prevent the risk of cross contamination.

Metal cases of this kind, encasing spirit lamps, rose in popularity from the mid-19th century onwards. They proved invaluable to private practitioners, as the portable nature of the cases meant that vaccinations could be administered at a patient’s home.
