- Trepanning means to drill a hole into the skull, and it is a medical technique used for lots of reasons. Historians have associated ancient trepanning practices with releasing evil spirits. However, the technique has also been used for thousands of years to release pressure on the skull for medical reasons. Drilling is still used in modern surgery to treat bleeding on the brain.
