Blood is usually stored in the refrigerator to preserve the cells, which means that in cases where rapid blood transfusions are necessary, warming of the blood needs to take place to prevent hypothermia of the patient. The blood flows through the tubing and is passed through some form of warming device, which allows the blood to attain an appropriate temperature before it reaches the patient. The Avon A60 warming coil was used for this purpose, probably in the 1980s.
