Postmortem examinations are used to determine whether the physician’s diagnosis when the patient was alive is correct. The Charles S. Thackray Company made this set in the late 20th century. His grandson then opened the Thackray Museum of Medicine in 1997. This kit contains 20 instruments, from thread, to a spine chisel, to bowel scissors. Spine chisels are used for separating the bones in the spine. Bowel scissors cutting open the intestines for examination, and Brain knives are used to cleanly cut the brain. I find all these instruments really interesting because it’s crazy to think about how many of these things have developed much further, and how many have stayed the same.
