Two grooved vaccine lancets in tortoiseshell scales, 2 3/8 inches

Labels
These early vaccination devices were used to pierce the skin before adding the vaccine. In cases of inoculation against a virus, a small scab from someone with the illness was applied directly into a wound on a healthy person. This worked by priming the immune system to respond to the virus, preparing it in case it was exposed in the future.
